What is Pico Laser tattoo removal?

Pico Laser tattoo removal uses very short pulses of light energy to target ink beneath the skin. Rather than changing a tattoo in a single visit, treatment is intended to support gradual fading as pigment is broken down and the body processes the fragments over time.

At CURA skin, this treatment is part of The CURA Freedom Collection. Your tattoo, skin and goals guide the assessment and treatment plan.

How the MEDIKYAG Pico Laser targets tattoo pigment

The MEDIKYAG is a picosecond Nd:YAG laser. Its ultra-short pulses create a photoacoustic effect: energy absorbed by tattoo pigment helps break it into smaller particles. The body gradually clears these fragments through its natural healing process.

This progressive process is why fading takes time. Skin needs time to recover between treatments, and the response is reviewed as treatment progresses. Different pigments can respond differently; there is no single treatment plan that fits every tattoo.

An individual response

What influences tattoo fading?

Results and number of treatments vary. These details help shape a realistic discussion about your tattoo.

Tattoo size

The area covered helps determine the scope of treatment. Small script and larger pieces require an individual assessment.

Tattoo age

How long you have had the tattoo and how much it has already faded are part of its history. Age alone cannot predict the outcome.

Ink colour

Pigments absorb light differently, so colours within the same tattoo may fade at different rates. Colour response is discussed during consultation.

Ink density

Dense designs and heavily inked areas need careful assessment. The amount and distribution of pigment can influence how fading progresses.

Skin type

Your skin type and condition help guide suitability and the treatment approach, including a discussion of possible pigment changes.

Professional or amateur tattoos

CURA skin's MEDIKYAG information includes both professional and amateur tattoos. Tell us how your tattoo was applied; neither category guarantees an easier or faster result.

Your consultation and treatment experience

  1. Start with an assessment. A complimentary consultation at CURA skin, 128 Queen Street West in Cambridge, is an opportunity to discuss your goals, tattoo history and skin. Treatment suitability is determined during consultation.
  2. Discuss the plan. Review the likely treatment approach, comfort options, potential risks and aftercare. Ask what fading may be achievable for your tattoo and how progress will be assessed.
  3. Know what to expect. Treatment can feel like a snapping sensation against the skin. Cooling or other comfort options can be discussed with your provider. Redness, swelling or bruising may occur; pigment changes and scarring are also possible risks.
  4. Allow time for recovery and review. Follow your individual care instructions. The next appointment and any changes to your plan depend on healing and response, rather than a guaranteed session count.

Preparing for treatment

Use your consultation to share your tattoo history, including previous removal treatments, and discuss your skin, health history and current medications or products.

Ask the clinic for preparation instructions specific to your treatment area, including guidance about sun exposure and skincare. Confirm what to apply or avoid before arriving, and contact CURA skin if the skin or your circumstances change before your appointment.

Aftercare and recovery

Follow the aftercare instructions provided for your skin. CURA skin's existing guidance includes keeping the treated area clean and dry, avoiding direct sunlight, and not picking or scratching scabs or blisters.

Use only the products your provider recommends for the treated area. Ask when to resume your usual routine and contact the clinic with concerns about healing or a reaction after treatment.

Realistic expectations for your tattoo

The aim is progressive fading. Complete removal cannot be promised, and some pigment may remain. Different areas or colours can respond unevenly, and an early change does not establish the final outcome.

Results and number of treatments vary. A consultation helps you understand the possibilities and limitations for your tattoo before deciding whether to proceed.

Our Results & FAQ page includes general treatment questions and skin-treatment examples. Those examples are not a prediction of your tattoo-removal result.
